How to Choose a Fashion Designing Course?

A smart education is essential if you want to make a name for yourself in the fashion designing industry. There are so many different types of fashion design courses available that it can be a tough task to know what one to pick. Here a list several things that you should take into consideration before picking your fashion design course.
Location is an important factor when considering a fashion designing course, although it should not necessarily be the deciding factor. If you are serious about your fashion designing training and education then it is often worth searching further afield just to see what different options are available to you. You may also find that it could work out more affordable to take a course in another country, rather than your own. At the end of the day it should all come down to what value the course will provide for you, and not its location.
The next thing to consider is how long the course is. You want to ensure that it is long enough to be able to cover everything that you need to learn in order to start a career as a fashion designer. If the course is a full time one you need to ensure that you are dedicated enough to see it through to the end and that you are able to support yourself financially throughout the duration of the course.
You will want to get a full breakdown of all the topics that are covered on the course. When it comes to fashion design you will want to partake in a course that both allows you to develop your creative talents, as well as one that teaches you the necessary skills to brand and market yourself as a designer. Many schools and universities will also offer special open day where you can go and take a look around the campus and ask questions.
It is a great idea to meet some of the tutors before you choose a certain course. The tutors should inspire you, and be able to get the information across in a clear and concise manner. You should ask what qualifications they hold, and how much experience they have had working in the industry. Some courses also get in guest speakers, or designers that are working within the industry so that you can ask those questions.
What qualifications will you gain at the end of the course? Are these qualifications nationally or even internationally recognized? Is there an opportunity to further your skills after taking your course? These are all things that you need to take into consideration.
You can also check that the course has good reviews. There are several ways you can do this; by searching online for independent reviews of the course, by asking the course providers for past student testimonials and you can also talk face to face with past students who have already taken the course.
When planning to go for a fashion designing course, you may come across a number of schools for fashion design. Use the abovementioned tips to select the right course. Visit this website to get more info.

How to choose a Fashion Design School?

As with any stream, fashion design requires professional education and training accompanied by a degree that shows that you are adept to work in the area of expertise that you have chosen. In order to gain this expertise, one needs to attend a fashion design institute. So what exactly is a fashion design institute? Well, a fashion design institute is an arts school for people whose main focus is on fashion and who create with fabrics.
So then how does one choose a fashion design institute then one might ask? Well, choosing a fashion design institute is as difficult as choosing a school for business or engineering. One needs to see the curriculum, content, facilities and faculty apart from the various course options, modules and reputation of the institute as at the end of the day finding the best fashion design school is the ulterior motive behind this exercise.
Apart from reputation (which is a must as most institutions in India are private!), other factors that one needs to consider are costs, size and what the school has to offer. An institute which operates out of a room makes no sense and so does a degree affiliated from a university that does not exist make any sense to attend. Moreover, some large schools offer interdisciplinary programmes where students can also learn business courses side by side which will help them set up their own label at a later stage. Additionally something else to consider is the on-campus placements an institute has on offer and lastly whether the institute has an end of the year degree show or not? It is imperative for students of fashion design to show their creativity and an institute that provides such a stage will definitely be better. Some students will also need some kind of scholarships and as mentioned above as most of these institutions are privately owned, scholarships are minimal and are usually merit based. It would also be a good idea to visit different institutions, meet their faculty and also get references from students who have graduated from them. After doing this process, students should typically choose a firm choice as well as a backup choice just in case they don’t get into their first choice of school.
As mentioned above the admissions process in a fashion design institute is as competitive as any other school as you need to convince the admissions team why you are better than the next candidate. A key component of studying or rather applying to a fashion design institute is drawing. One needs to be extremely proficient artist and should have decent drawing skills as you would be required to sketch out your ideas and concepts before working with fabrics and forming the actual garment. Fashion design institutes would like to see your work prior to accepting you onto a programme, this is what’s called creating a portfolio for creative careers and is true for both fashion design and art related programmes.
An additional benefit for applicants would be some sewing samples or samples of clothes that one has made. Apart from this references from your mentors would also add value to your application. However, the most important factor for any fashion design institute selecting you is your high school grades; they should meet the bare minimum entry requirements.
Once you are selected into a fashion design institute, you will get to learn a lot of things. Apart from fashion design some of the newer schools will also teach you CAD/CAM, marketing, merchandising, branding, entrepreneurship, etc.

How does the fashion design process work?

A fashion designer has many things to consider whilst planning his/her collection. These variables include research on sales, themes, trends and the most crucial part, the storyboard or the mood board. Collection planning and creation includes designing a complete range of garments that fit into a chosen mood, theme or trend. However at the same time there will be a commonality running throughout the entire collection. Moreover, garments in the collection should complement each other and carry a specific design characteristic that is identifiable to either the designer or the brand or label.
Large retail chains plan their collections meticulously, some working more than a year in advance. Their plans typically include the type of garments, number of styles, fabrics too use, price points, etc. In order to do this the designer needs to have an in depth understanding of the manufacturing process as well as the costs involved in order to be able to design for different price groups.
Collection planning is an important part of the fashion designing process and is based on historical sales data and is created to achieve maximum sales results so as to make the designer appealing to the end customer. The planning process will also include identifying colours and ratios to gain popularity with consumers. Sometimes at the beginning of each season, some fashion designers might also undertake inspiration trips as a part of their research. The aim of this research is to seek out new detailing, fabrics, silhouettes, etc that they feel will appeal to the target customer. A designer might choose to buy samples to refer as well to refer during the fashion design process.
From here on, the designer will start putting together ‘storyboards’or ‘mood boards’ that illustrate the collections theme or trend. Following which the designer might select certain themes that might suit his/her target market. Story boards or mood boards include images that depict the mood or inspiration behind the theme that the fashion designer has chosen. The pictures include silhouettes, colours, trims and text describing the so called ‘mood’.
A typical designer works on multiple trends so that all areas are covered to offer something new and updated at regular intervals. The reason behind this is that the designer will have something that appeals to everyone’s tastes. Once the story board is over, the designer will move onto creating colour palettes which embodies creating and using a wide array of colours that complement the theme and usually will include a core colour accompanied by highlight colours. Designers choose colours for their collections using fabric swatches, Pantone books, accompanied by the research and inspiration from early on in the design process. Once this is completed, the fashion designer can start designing her collection.
So where does one learn all of the above. In order to understand and learn the abovementioned processes, a candidate has to undertake the study of fashion design or fashion designing. Many institutions offer a variety of career oriented fashion design courses. These can either be diplomas in fashion design or a fashion design degree. One can also do a short term certificate Courses in fashion design. Newer courses also integrate fashion design and retail management together or offer the fashion design degree with a specialization such as luxury management.
